my friend had an 'off' in his miata into the woods after coming in contact with a "road quality issue" similar to this, and all that actually had to get fixed was his front subframe and fenders. So he swapped in a 2nd gen miata subframe into his 1st gen and called it a day. Miata front bumpers are pretty durable.

Talk him down a hundred or two, go to town parting the bitch.

The hardtop alone is worth 1k$.

Working Engine + tranny + LSD diff ~=~ 1k$

Rear finish panel alone is 200$-300$.

You'd be in the black in no time.

Yep, i do know those hardtops bring nice cash.

IF i did buy it, i wouldnt part it. Id hoon it. A crash like this means i wont feel so bad if i hit something the next time.

But its about 800$ more than what i want to spend, and id prefer to be able to at least drive it home.

Well, it has a $1000 dollar hardtop... so consider the rest of the car to be a grand. If the damage is as minimal as he says it is then it actually isn't such a bad deal

Talk him down a couple hundred. Sell the hard top and finish panel, and you have a $500 miata(well, maybe a grand after all parts needed). Thrash for 6 months, sell the drivetrain to cover the cost, sell a couple other parts to help reimburse gas money, scrap it.

Don't part it out. You could probably talk him down to 1,700, tow it for 100 bucks, sell the hardtop for 900, and use that for new windshield, front control arms and a full run of maintenance items. Then get a nice alignment....have fun!
